Knowing how and where to start your breeding journey can be confusing because you don't need any qualifications or need to pass a test to breed a dog. That's why I have created a framework that promotes responsible breeding by establishing three critical sections of dog breeding. I call these Pillars, with each being a critical point in your breeding journey of - Planning, Preparing and Parenting. They essentially underpin all aspects of ethical and responsible breeding - by supporting owners like you, to develop a sound foundation of knowledge to increase your ability and skill-set by raising your competence and confidence.
The Three Pillar system is a tailored guide, providing a structure for your entire breeding journey. Surprisingly, maybe even scarily, a breeding journey is at least 19 weeks long, over 4 months, that's a third of your year! There's no need to feel anxious or stressed during this time. The Three Pillars create an easy-to-follow framework that brings peace of mind by identifying all essential breeding matters at each stage. It also helps you proactively address potential issues to reduce risk and increase your breeding confidence and ultimate success.

PILLAR 1: Planning

Planning should start way before your female is in heat. Once you contemplate breeding your female, it's time to start researching to ensure your female is in optimal condition, raise your awareness of health requirements for your breed and seek out the specific health checks or genetic tests that should be taken before breeding. This pillar also helps you understand the entire breeding timeline so that you can recognise and adhere to ethical and safe standards by ensuring both breeding dogs meet the expected fertility standards and selecting the best mating method for their safety.

PILLAR 2: Preparing

Preparing is pivotal to the success of your breeding experience, and this pillar strongly emphasises the health and well-being of your pregnant dog and her puppies. This involves reviewing her medication regimen, making vital dietary adjustments, knowing when to add suitable supplements, and understanding their benefits to avoid severe health conditions. This pillar enforces the importance of birthing plans and having a safe breed-suitable whelping environment. You'll also learn how to monitor pregnancy and puppy progress during gestation to minimise whelping issues such as inertia and multiple ways to monitor labour and ensure a safe puppy delivery.

PILLAR 3: Parenting

The parenting pillar involves post-birth care, including monitoring the health and development of newborn puppies until they leave for their new owner homes. Overseeing and managing the dam's recovery to avoid serious conditions like Eclampsia and Mastitis whilst caring for her litter. This includes awareness of the critical care and growth milestone markers and how to quickly identify and help a failing puppy. A complete understanding of managing nutrition requirements for lactating dam and essential puppy weaning requirements. Additionally, this pillar encourages proactive management and enrichment for the correct growth and development of a litter to ensure puppies are well-socialised and prepared to adapt to their new homes. And finally overseeing the extensive administrative tasks attached to puppy new homes.
