Ovulation cytology swabbing and progesterone blood testing are the most effective methods for identifying the optimal breeding time. Cytology swabbing tracks cellular changes in response to oestrogen levels, while progesterone testing measures hormone levels to predict and confirm ovulation.
Progesterone Blood Testing
Progesterone is the primary hormone secreted by the female reproductive system, playing a crucial role in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embryo development. It serves as an ideal indicator for detecting ovulation through blood testing.

Using laboratory equipment, a venous blood sample collected by your vet from an animal in season can be forwarded to us to measure its progesterone levels. This quantitative result will indicate if your pet has ovulated and predict when she may ovulate.
I recommend starting the test on day 6 of the season (no later than day 9 for working breeds). Retesting every 2 - 4 days is required until ovulation is confirmed. |

Ovulation Cytology Swabbing
This method is simple and quick technique involves using a series of vaginal swabs over several days, starting from day 6 of the dog's heat cycle, and retesting every 3 days until ovulation is confirmed. We can supply the swabs, which you can then return to us for processing and cell analysis. The cells change as oestrogen levels increase, indicating ovulation.
